What We Found

Foods made with whey protein from precision fermentation have been sold in the U.S. since 2019, including ice cream and milk-style drinks (for example, Bored Cow at Sprouts and Target).

It must be listed in the ingredients and labeled as a milk allergen. Brands often call it "animal-free" or "non-animal whey protein."
