What We Found

The filing is real. An Oct. 21, 2026 motion from the U.S. Attorney's Office for D.C., asking to delay unsealing search-warrant records, refers to her as "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar."

The filing doesn't explain the name and doesn't prove she used a false identity. The warrant and supporting papers remain sealed, and she has not been charged with a crime.

Her office says "Ilhan Omar is her real name"; Omar calls the alias claim a lie. A U.S. Defense Language Institute report notes Somali names follow the father's and grandfather's names and women don't change names at marriage.

She married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009 and divorced in 2017. The claim that he is her brother has circulated for years; no proof has been made public, and she strongly rejects it.
